DePuy Hip Replacement
DePuy Orthopedics (acquired by Johnson & Johnson in 1998) has developed three hip replacement designs since 2000 with high failure rates: the Pinnacle Hip Replacement System, the ASR XL Acetabular System and the ASR Hip Resurfacing System.

All three products have problems that arise from their metal-on-metal components. They have voluntarily recalled two (both ASR products) as a result of higher than normal rates of corrective surgery. Prior to the recall, an estimated 93,000 of the ASR and ASR XL products had been sold.
In August 2010, the DePuy ASR metal-on-metal hip implant was recalled after data from the UK joint registry indicated that 12 percent of implants failed within five years of the original implant date. Thirteen percent of patients needed revision surgery five years after receiving an ASR XL Acetabular System.
DePuy Settlement
On Nov. 19, 2013, Johnson & Johnson announced that DePuy Orthopedics Inc. had reached a U.S. settlement agreement to compensate ASR Hip System patients who had surgery to replace their ASR hip.
The settlement, valued at approximately $2.5 billion, was based on an estimated 8,000 patients participating in the program.
In the News (2.20.15): DePuy agrees to extend current U.S. settlement program for those with a qualifying revision surgery.

DePuy has entered an agreement which will effectively extend the current U.S. Settlement Program for those with a DePuy ASR device, implanted in either a total or partial hip replacement procedure.
Cutter Law represented a considerable number of claimants in the first ASR settlement round; nearly all of our participating clients found the settlement program both efficient and fair.
We are pleased with this announcement and look forward to further details, which will be announced within the next few weeks. We remain available to answer any questions from clients or anyone with a metal-on-metal hip replacement.
