Cutter Law P.C.

Every year, families across the country make the difficult decision to place a loved one in a nursing home. When a loved one is no longer able to live alone or live independently, a nursing home may be the most logical choice.

Unfortunately, nursing homes are not always safe places to be.

According to the National Center on Elder Abuse, elders who are victim to abuse have a 300 percent higher risk of death than those who are not victim to abuse.

How can this behavior be stopped? Concerned loved ones should be on the lookout for signs of nursing home abuse or neglect, which may include:

  • Unexplained bruises or cuts
  • Pressure sores/bed sores
  • Falls
  • Dehydration or malnutrition
  • Weight loss
  • Changes in behavior
  • Unexplained changes in medication
  • Emotional issues
  • Fear of certain staff members

Remember: These signs do not definitely prove that your loved one is experiencing abuse or neglect. Rather, they are signs that something may be wrong.

Many nursing home residents cannot defend themselves, and may not be able to clearly communicate that something is wrong.

As a concerned loved one, you can be on the lookout for these warning signs. If you suspect that your loved one is in danger, you should take prompt action. This may involve moving your loved one to a different facility.

You should also consider talking to an attorney as soon as possible. Compensation may be available for victims of nursing home abuse and neglect.
