Cutter Law P.C.

Distracted driving can encompass a wide variety of distracting behaviors.

Most people think of talking on a cell phone or texting while driving as the most common and perhaps most dangerous forms of distracted driving.

But any time a driver's attention is taken off of driving and placed on something else, an accident can happen.

One task that can be distracting to drivers is the use of a GPS.

Drivers may look down at a GPS device while driving, or interact with the device. Drivers may also be tempted to otherwise use device when checking the GPS: Checking email, sending a text message, etc.

Drivers should always avoid using their phones while driving. But using a GPS is often a necessary task. How can drivers safely use a GPS while operating a vehicle? Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Pre-enter the address or destination on the GPS - avoid doing this while driving
  • Attach your phone or GPS to a mounting device (ensure compliance with California state laws)
  • If you have to interact with a GPS while driving, pull over to a safe location such as a parking lot
  • Be aware of your destination location before starting your GPS

Distracted driving causes thousands of accidents in California every year. Learning to safely use a GPS while driving - and eliminating other use of electronic devices while driving - can help reduce your risk of being involved in an accident.
