Commuting is a necessary evil for millions of working Americans.

Every day, people spend significant amounts of time getting to and from work.

Staying safe on your daily commute

Driving is a dangerous activity. Individuals working in the areas listed above face long commute times and stressful driving conditions. These conditions create a dangerous driving environment.

Here are some tips to keep in mind to keep yourself safe on your driving commute:

  • Avoid distracted driving: Using a cell phone while driving is a dangerous practice. The only safe approach is a zero tolerance approach - just put your phone down.
  • Practice defensive driving: Prepare for the unexpected while driving. Anticipate other driver's movements and actions. Allow plenty of space between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead of you. Signal turns, look over your shoulder, avoid excessive speeding, and stay calm while driving.
  • Maintain your vehicle: All those commuting hours cause wear and tear on your vehicle. Make sure to regularly change oil, check tire pressure, and bring in your vehicle for regular checkups.
  • Choose the safest route: Certain routes to your workplace may be safer than others. Spend some time mapping out routes that allow you to drive as possible.
