It seems like every day, a new name comes out: Another high profile public figure accused of sexual harassment.

In recent months, dozens of famous actors, directors, newscasters, politicians, and others have been publically accused of sexual harassment and assault. Victims have come forward with distressing details of inappropriate and unwanted sexual conduct made against them.

Sexual harassment in the workplace

In the workplace, sexual harassment is and always has been a major problem.

It can be difficult for victims to speak out against the behavior. They may fear that they won't get the support they need. They may fear repercussions (such as job loss or demotion) for speaking out.

  • Sexual harassment only happens to women: Despite what many people believe, men can experience sexual harassment at work. According to a Washington Post poll, 10 percent of men reported experiencing sexual harassment at work.
  • Sexual harassment only happens to attractive people: This myth is especially damaging, because it prevents people from getting the help they need because they do not think they will be believed. The fact is, sexual harassment victims can be all ages, all heights, all weights, all levels of attractiveness. Sexual harassment is more about dominance and power than how attractive the victim is.
  • Reporting sexual harassment may result in job loss: It is illegal for your employer to fire you or otherwise retaliate against you for reporting sexual harassment. If this has happened to you, it is advisable to speak to an attorney as soon as possible.
