Cutter Law P.C.

When it comes to distracted driving safety in the United States, the statistics don't lie: According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 3,477 people were killed and 391,000 people were injured in distracted driving accidents in 2015.

Distracted driving is dangerous, and most people know that. A study done by Progressive Insurance revealed that most people think distracted driving is dangerous. But many individuals think that they are the exception to the rule. Many people believe that they can safely and successfully text while driving.

Let's take a closer look at some of the findings:

  • Distracted driving confidence by age: Drivers under the age of 35 are 10 times more confident in their ability to safely text while driving than drivers who are 55 or older. More than 60 percent of drivers between the ages of 18 and 34 believe they can safely text while driving. Only 6 percent of drivers 55 or older think they can safely text while driving.
  • Men vs. women: 21 percent of men and 11 percent of women are "very confident" in their ability to safely text while driving. However, 88 percent of men and 97 percent of women believe that texting while driving should be banned.
  • Most common cause of accidents: More than 65 percent of respondents believe that looking at a phone while driving is the most common cause of car accidents.

Do not disturb while driving

Apple recently rolled out a feature on their iOS 11 update that will help keep drivers' eyes on the road and off of their phones. The Do Not Disturb While Driving feature can be programmed to start when the driver starts driving, and stop once the destination is reached.

Users have three options to choose from. The phone will auto reply to the sender, notifying him or her that the driver is driving and unavailable.

Taking personal responsibility while driving

Cell phone use while driving is dangerous, no matter who is behind the wheel. When drivers fail to recognize the dangers of distracted driving and continue to practice it, we are no closer to making our roads safer. Every driver must take personal responsibility for his or her actions behind the wheel.
