Hip-replacement-3.jpg

Hip replacement procedures in the United States doubled over the course of 10 years, from 2000 to 2010.

Metal-on-metal hip replacements are particularly problematic. Metal debris from these devices can enter the space around the implant and the bloodstream, causing serious complications.

Research from the National Joint Registry of England and Wales, the world's largest joint replacement registry, found that 6.2 percent of metal-on-metal hip replacements had failed after 5 years. Only 3.2 percent of ceramic and 1.7 percent of metal-on-plastic hip replacements had failed.

How can you know if you have a defective metal-on-metal hip replacement? Here are some signs and symptoms to look out for:

  • Hip pain
  • Swelling
  • Difficulty walking
  • Difficulty standing or bearing weight
  • Clicking or crunching of the hip
  • Loosening of the hip implant
  • Bone erosion
  • Toxicity of the blood
  • Thyroid problems
  • Kidney disfunction

There may be other symptoms, as well.

If you have received a defective hip replacement and are experiencing symptoms, you should discuss your concerns with your doctor.

You should also speak to a lawyer who can help you explore your legal options. Victims of defective metal-on-metal hip replacements may be eligible for compensation. Talk to a lawyer if you have received an implant manufactured by DePuy, Biomet, Stryker, Wright, Smith & Nephew or Zimmer.
