Cutter Law P.C.

There is no such thing as safe distracted driving.

Every time a driver chooses to multitask behind the wheel, chances of an accident increase.

In 2015, a total of 3,477 people were killed and 391,000 injured in distracted driving-related accidents.

But even though most people know the dangers of distracted driving, they continue to do it. Many believe that they can safely talk and text while driving.

But for some people, the temptation to use a smartphone while driving is just too strong.

Tips To Help Curb Your Distracted Driving Habit

Here are some tips for people who are looking to curb their distracted driving habits:

  • Put the phone out of reach: A phone within reach is tempting to use while driving. To eliminate that temptation, put your phone in the glove box, in the back seat or even in the trunk.
  • Pull over to use your phone: If there is a situation that requires you to use your phone, pull over. Find a safe spot to park your car: A parking lot, a parking spot, etc. Use your phone, then put it away for the duration of your trip.
  • Get help from social apps: There are apps that can help drivers avoid using their phones while driving. In-Traffic Reply is an app for Android that sends out auto-replies to calls and texts when the phone is moving over 6 mph. AT&T DriveMode is another app that turns off text alerts and sends auto-replies to text senders.
  • Take a zero-tolerance approach: You are in control of your actions. You choose whether or not to use your phone while driving. Starting right now, you can take a zero-tolerance approach to distracted driving. There is no better time to start.

Even if you stop distracted driving, your friends and family members may continue doing it. It is important to talk to others about the dangerous of distracted driving and the importance of stopping this behavior. We all play a role in keeping our roadways safe.
