Electronic cigarettes are surging in popularity as people seek an alternative to traditional cigarettes. Many consider e-cigarettes safer than their old-fashioned counterparts, but e-cigs are more dangerous in one specific way: They can explode.

What causes e-cigarettes to explode?

The issue is with the lithium-ion battery. When the device heats up, it can cause the flammable liquid electrolyte inside to become very hot, often reaching its boiling point. The device can become so hot that the lithium-ion battery can begin to melt. The pressure inside of the device can build up and lead to an explosion.

The device is most likely to explode when it overheats - due to overcharging or sitting in direct sunlight, for example.

Although e-cigarette explosions are rare, they can be extremely serious. Victims can suffer serious burns on their legs, hands or mouth as the result of the explosion. Some have suffered fractured bones and blindness. Since the device is literally exploding, the results can be dangerously unpredictable.

Recently, a car accident occurred after an e-cigarette exploded in a woman's lap while she was driving. The woman suffered burns to her leg.

When an e-cig explosion occurs and an injury results, the victim may be eligible for significant compensation. It is important for the victim to work with an attorney who has experience handling these types of cases. An attorney can help seek compensation to cover all costs and damages associated with the accident.
