Biking is more popular than ever, becoming a favored pastime, form of exercise, and method of commuting. In fact, the number of bike commuters has increased 60 percent over the last decade or so.

Most bicyclists are aware of the dangers of cycling - and most cyclists don't let those dangers get in the way of enjoying their sport. Here are some bicycle safety tips to help you stay safe on the road this season:

  • Wear a helmet: Helmets aren't just for kids. Every cyclist should wear a helmet that fits well and is securely attached. Wearing a helmet is one of the most effective strategies for avoiding serious head and brain injuries that result from biking accidents.
  • Make yourself visible: Although motorists should be on the lookout for bicyclists, it is in the best interests of bicyclists to make themselves visible. Wearing reflective clothing and using daytime running lights can help bicyclists remain visible to motorists.
  • Pay extra attention in intersections: Intersections are where most bicycle accidents happen. Bicyclists should make every effort to make eye contact with drivers, stay out of blind spots, and pass safely in intersections.
  • Beware of dooring incidents: One major concern for bicyclists is dooring, or running into opened car doors. A total of 41 states have instituted dooring laws, but the problem persists. Bikers should be on the lookout for cars that have just parked or still have their lights on - indicators that car doors may be opening.

Biking can be an enjoyable and safe mode of transportation, but everyone must work together to accomplish that goal. Keep these safety tips in mind, obey biking safety rules, and educate your motorist friends and family members on how to accommodate cyclists.
