Cutter Law P.C.

Each year, many California families seek reputable nursing home care for elderly loved ones who may suffer from diminished mental or physical capabilities. Because elderly folks are increasingly vulnerable when placed in the care of others, looking for signs of a well-maintained and trustworthy facility are absolutely critical.

The National Institute of Justice suggests some indications to look for to determine a facility’s integrity and commitment to patient care:

  • Facility Cleanliness: Pungent odors, full trash canisters, soiled linens, dirty laundry in hallways, and unkempt cafeteria space are all red flags. Facilities that have patient care as a priority will guarantee daily tasks are accomplished to keep residents comfortable, healthy and clean.
  • Staff Performance: Confident caretakers are friendly, transparent about details like medical records, knowledgeable about resident needs and whereabouts, and poised in the presence of law enforcement or investigators.
  • Resident Condition: Elderly residents who are well cared for will be alert, clean, current on medication needs and have a well-maintained personal space, including washed linens and sanitized medical equipment.

Last year, CBS news reported that the largest chain of nursing homes in the state of California faced intense scrutiny about the way they cared for their residents. After a deceased resident’s daughter speculated elder abuse and poor treatment, she filed a lawsuit that caught the attention of investigators. She claimed that her 68-year-old mother died only five short weeks after arriving at the care facility. Further investigation revealed other discrepancies including a 2-star rating for the company’s staff, a below-average score according to Medicare.
