Anyone who has been to California knows that driving here can be challenging. There are many factors that make this a difficult place to drive: Heavy traffic, traffic jams, diverse weather and road conditions, dangerous stretches of highway, distracted and impaired drivers, etc.

But some areas are more dangerous than others. Let's take a look at some of the highways in California that are known to be particularly dangerous:

  • Highway 99: ValuePenguin recently named California Highway 99, which runs through the Central Valley, as the most dangerous highway in the country. There were 264 fatal accidents between the years of 2011 and 2015. The deadliest city for driving along Highway 99 is Fresno, where 34 fatal accidents occurred between 2011 and 2015.
  • State Route 138: Popular Mechanics named California State Route 138, which runs from western Mojave Desert to the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains, as one of America's 10 deadliest highways. This stretch of highway certainly has a reputation, as many people refer to it as the " Death Trap Highway".
  • State Route 12: Another notoriously dangerous stretch of highway in California is State Route 12 - known as the "Blood Highway" - which runs between Rio Vista and Lodi. This road is notorious for heavy semi truck traffic and numerous blind spots.
  • Highway 17: Highway 17, which runs between Santa Cruz and San Jose, has seen an uptick in automobile crashes. This road is known for dangerous driving conditions, including sharp turns, blind spots, and heavy traffic.

What can drivers do to stay safe on these dangerous stretches of highway? Paying closer attention in problem areas can certainly help. But it is important to remember that accidents can happen anywhere.

Drivers should pay attention, minimize distractions, and obey traffic laws no matter where they are driving. We all play a part in keeping our roads and highways safe for driving.
