No one anticipates being involved in a car crash. When it happens, it usually takes the driver by surprise.

From a legal perspective, there are certain things that should be done after an accident resulting in injuries. However, in the aftermath of an accident, the driver (and any passengers) is likely experiencing some degree of shock. This can make it impossible to think clearly and perform even the simplest of tasks.

So what should be done after an accident?

  • Call 911
  • Get medical attention if there are any injuries
  • Take photos of the accident scene
  • Get the other driver's insurance information
  • Talk to any eyewitnesses
  • Do not admit fault (an investigation will determine what caused the accident)

But no one can truly prepare for a traffic accident. Accounting for the "shock factor", here are some tips to keep in mind to ensure that important legal steps are taken after an accident:

  • Delegate: If you were traveling with another person, have him or her help you gather information.
  • Use a cheat sheet. It's not a bad idea to keep a list of what you need to know in the glove compartment, or on your cell phone. (Print off this article for future reference.)
  • Slow down. Shock will usually pass in a few minutes, and your adrenaline rush will abate. Take a few minutes and try to relax. This will help you think more clearly and do what needs to be done at this time.

If you are seriously injured, of course, all this goes out the window. The most important thing you can do is to get medical attention.

Finally, a good lawyer can help you gather all of this information. If you wish to speak to a personal injury lawyer from Cutter Law, P.C., please call 888-285-3333. We offer a free case evaluation.
