Cutter Law P.C.

Many California residents enjoy the companionship of canines, and these beloved animals are the perfect pet for loving families everywhere. However, owning a dog also means acknowledging the risks of potential injuries related to dog bites. Whether people own a dog or live near a dog, familiarization with how to safely behave around these four-legged creatures can potentially help prevent a dog bite from occurring.

California is no exception when it comes to a steady report of injuries related to dog bite incidents. In fact, according to The Sacramento Bee, 2015 saw nearly 39,000 people treated for dog bites in ER visits. This alarming number is up by 44 percent from 2006 when that number was 12,000. This statistic demonstrates the need for people to understand what precautions to take and what behaviors to avoid when in a potentially threatening situation with a dog.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that over 50 percent of dog bites involve a dog that is familiar to the person attacked. When a person is around a dog, adherence to these suggestions can help them stay safe:

  •          Be aware of stray dogs and encourage children to notify an adult if they see a stray
  •          Never run away from a charging dog
  •          Never tease a dog that is grooming, caring for young, or eating
  •          Do not startle, panic or make loud noises when confronted by an unfamiliar dog
  •          Always supervise children who are around a dog
  •          Avoid encouraging a dog to fight, attack, or play aggressively

By respecting a dog's space and personal needs and avoiding strays or unfamiliar dogs, people can protect themselves and prevent a dog bite from occurring.
