Cutter Law P.C.

There is little else as exciting and memorable as witnessing the birth of your children and holding them for the first time. However, along with the eager anticipation, many California parents experience the looming anxiety that something could go wrong. Familiarizing yourself with common birth injuries may help to put your mind at ease and provide an added measure of confidence if something does happen.

The University of Rochester Medical Center provides a list of injuries that are common in infants during the birth process. These include the following:

  • Nerve damage in the face, arms and hands
  • Clavicle or collarbone fractures
  • Bruising and swelling on the cranium
  • Blood vessel breakage in the eyes
  • Bleeding under specific bones in the head

You and your baby may be at increased risk of birth injury if any of the following incidences apply to your situation:

  • Your baby is delivered via caesarean section
  • Your contractions lack the strength to move your baby through the birth canal
  • Your labor is prolonged, difficult or high-risk
  • Devices are used in the delivery process such as forceps or vacuums
  • Your baby is big or born prematurely
  • You are overweight or have an abnormally small birth canal and/or pelvis

Birth injuries are also known as birth trauma and can happen even when you and your baby are healthy. Often, these injuries are purely the result of the birth process and can be overcome and remedied with time. Sometimes, however, these injuries are the result of medical malpractice. If you suspect your baby was injured because of medical malpractice, contact the experienced Birth Injury attorneys at Cutter Law for a free case evaluation. Call (888) 285-3333.
