There are few things more exciting to motorcyclists than an open road - and the start of a long riding season.

As you start planning your summer cycling excursions, it is important to keep some safety tips in mind. Here are some easy things you can do to keep yourself safe on the roads this summer:

  • Avoiding riding in blind spots: One of the most important things motorcyclists can do to stay safe while riding is to avoid riding in another vehicle's blind spot. Make sure that you are visible in the other vehicle's mirrors. If you are in another vehicle's blind spot, get out of it by changing lanes, reducing your speed or passing the vehicle. Whatever you do, do not remain in a blind spot.
  • Keep your distance: When riding, it's best to keep ample space between you and the vehicle in front of you (aim for a four-second gap). If possible, ride in an open zone - in a gap between groups of cars.
  • Make yourself visible: It is easy for a driver to lose sight of a motorcyclist. To make their presence on the roadway known, motorcyclists should safely vary speed, wear bright clothing or protective wear, and stay out of blind spots (see above).
  • Practice safe driving habits: The most obvious riding tips are probably the most important. Motorcyclists should avoid excessive speeding, using smart phones while riding, and riding in extreme weather conditions.

It is the responsibility of every motorist to obey traffic laws and operate a vehicle in a safe manner. Unfortunately, this does not always happen. While there is little you can do to control the actions of other motorists, there are things you can do to reduce your risk of getting in an accident. Make safe riding your priority - and enjoy the season that lies in front of you!
