Johnson and Johnson makes over 90 percent of its revenue on medical devices and prescription drugs like Risperdal using clever advertising campaigns, according to a research article that can be found here.

How We Can Help

The California product liability attorneys at Cutter Law P.C. are investigating claims involving Risperdal, an antipsychotic medication manufactured by Johnson & Johnson.

Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a division of Johnson & Johnson, manufactures the generic version of the drug, which is known as risperidone.

Both Risperdal and risperidone have been linked to severe side effects, including gynecomastia in male children and adolescents.

Approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1993, Risperdal is commonly prescribed to individuals suffering from acute mania and schizophrenia. It has also been used for off-label treatment for those suffering from dementia, attention deficit disorder (ADD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety and depression, even in children.

The manufacturers have been accused of not providing adequate warnings about the risks and potential side effects of the drugs.

Gynecomastia is the benign enlargement of breast tissue in males. While this can occur naturally, an estimated 10 to 15 percent of gynecomastia cases result from the use of medications.

Increased levels of prolactin, a hormone that stimulates breast development in women, is being shown in young males that have been taking Risperdal. Additionally, they may experience breast pain or nipple discharge.

Other serious side effects have been linked to Risperdal, including diabetes, sexual dysfunction, bone loss, neuroleptic malignant syndrome and pituitary tumors.
