The California product liability attorneys at Cutter Law P.C. are investigating claims involving Benicar (olmesartan medoxomil), a medication for the treatment of high blood pressure.
Benicar, manufactured by Daiichi Sankyo Inc. and marketed by Forest Laboratories Inc., works by blocking angiotensin receptors, which are hormones that cause blood vessels to constrict. In addition to inhibiting this action, Benicar allows the kidneys to eliminate extra sodium and fluids. The combination of these actions helps to improve blood flow and lower blood pressure.
Benicar Side Effects
Approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in April 2002, Benicar has been linked to serious intestinal problems that mimic celiac disease. Unlike celiac disease, however, a gluten-free lifestyle will not improve symptoms.
Side effects of Benicar may include:
- Permanent intestinal damage
- Chronic diarrhea
- Severe weight loss and dehydration
In July 2013, the FDA announced that Benicar would receive a label update to acknowledge the risk of sprue-like enteropathy, a condition characterized by severe and chronic diarrhea and weight loss. This condition can take months or years to develop and may require hospitalization.
In a study published in 2012, Mayo Clinic researchers found that over a three-year period, 22 patients taking Benicar demonstrated celiac disease-like symptoms; however, their blood tests did not support this diagnosis. According to the study, when patients stopped taking the drug, their symptoms improved.
Following the Mayo Clinic study, researchers from the American College of Gastroenterology reported that olmesartan, the active ingredient in Benicar, had been linked to 40 additional cases of sprue-like enteropathy.
